The ViaSpluga leads for almost 65 km along the once-important mule track from Thusis in Switzerland via the Passo dello Spluga to Chiavenna in Italy.
Graubünden - Italy
From Thusis to Chiavenna
The Via Spluga is a historical and cultural hiking trail that tells the story of the Passo dello Spluga region. Since the Middle Ages, the destinies of the Rhaeto-Romanesque and Lombard peoples have been linked here on the direct route from southern Germany to Lombardy.
At the outset, it crosses the dramatic Viamala, the most famous gorge on the Splügen Route. It continues through Zillis and Andeer, until the welcoming valley narrows to the difficult-to-navigate Rofflaschlucht gorge. It reaches Splügen (1475 m), crossing the sunny Rheinwald valley. From there, the path climbs south to the Passo dello Spluga, at an altitude of 2115 m, before descending through the Cardinello Valley gorge and the wooded Val San Giacomo to Chiavenna.
Our goal this year is to leave Thusis and reach Splügen in 5 days. Splügen, a picturesque village that received the Wakker Prize in 1995, offers an incredible number of hiking trails, each more magnificent than the last. We will then spend 2 nights in Splügen at the Bodenhaus Hotel and discover its 300-year-old history before hiking up to Lake Surettasee. We will then have a wonderful overview of this wild and magnificent region.
Of course, we will have the option of shortening the stages, taking the postal bus or spending the day at the hotel's wellness center.
We will finish our journey the following year, leaving from Splügen to arrive in Chiavenna.
